Quick answer: April is the month Cornwall gets its sunshine back. Sunshine hours jump by around half again on March — the biggest month-on-month increase of the year — frost all but disappears, and daylight grows by nearly two hours. The sea is still cold at about 9.6°C. The 2027 quirk is that Easter falls in March, so the school holiday ends on 9 April and term restarts on the 12th: the fortnight from 12 to 30 April is one of the best quiet windows in the entire calendar, with the gardens at full tilt and the bluebells out.
April is the turn that March promises. The gardens are still going, the bluebells arrive, the light lasts into the evening, and in 2027 the crowds leave after the first week and do not come back until summer. This follows Cornwall in March, and the full-year picture is in our weather guide.

April weather at a glance
| Camborne (west) | St Mawgan (north coast) | |
|---|---|---|
| Average daily high | 12.1°C | 12.5°C |
| Average nightly low | 6.6°C | 6.4°C |
| Rainfall | 73mm | 66mm |
| Days with 1mm+ of rain | about 11.5 | about 11 |
| Sunshine | 187 hours | 194 hours |
| Nights with air frost | 0.03 | 0.27 |
The sunshine figure is the story. March gets 125–133 hours; April gets 187–194. That is an increase of about 60 hours in a single step, the largest month-on-month gain of the whole year, and it works out at roughly six and a half hours of sunshine a day against March’s four.
Frost is finished. Camborne averages 0.03 air-frost nights in April — about one year in thirty. St Mawgan averages 0.27. After that, neither station records a single frost until October. If you garden, April is when the risk effectively lifts on the coast.
April is also drier than March at both stations and, at St Mawgan, the second-driest month of the year after May. The wind drops too: around 10.4 knots, down from 11.5 in March and well below the winter average.
The sea is still winter-cold
The air has gained nearly two degrees since March. The sea has gained about one, to roughly 9.6°C at Newlyn on the long-run coastal record. It is the gap that catches people out every year: the first properly warm afternoon of spring arrives, the beach looks like summer, and the water is colder than it was in some of the winter months.
Anything below 15°C counts as cold water, so April swimming means a wetsuit or a short, deliberate dip with someone watching. Lifeguard cover in April is partial at best and the 2027 schedule was not published when we wrote this — check the RNLI’s beach finder rather than assuming a patrolled beach. Our cold-water guide covers doing it properly.
Light into the evening
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Day length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 April | 07:00 | 19:52 | 12h 52m |
| 15 April | 06:30 | 20:15 | 13h 45m |
| 30 April | 06:01 | 20:38 | 14h 37m |
A gain of one hour forty-five minutes across the month. By the end of April the sun sets at twenty to nine, which is the point at which an evening on the coast path or a beach after work stops being a rushed thing. It is the single biggest practical difference between an April and a March visit.
The 2027 quirk: Easter has already been and gone
Most years, April is the Easter month. 2027 is not most years. Good Friday falls on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March, so the whole Easter weekend happens before April begins.
What that does to the calendar:
- 1–9 April: the back half of the Cornish school holiday. Busy, with holiday prices.
- Monday 12 April: summer term starts in Cornwall.
- 12–30 April: term time, no bank holiday, and the gardens at their best. This is the quiet fortnight.
- Monday 3 May: the next bank holiday, and the start of the May rush.
If you want the Cornish spring without the Cornish crowds, the middle and end of April 2027 is arguably the best fortnight of the entire year to come. Everything is open for the season, the weather has turned, and the schools are back. Term dates vary between academies and voluntary-aided schools, so check if it matters to you.
Bluebells, and the gardens at full tilt
March belongs to magnolias and daffodils. April is when the woodland floor goes over.
Bluebells are an April and May flower — this is the point we made in the March guide about not believing anyone who promises them earlier. Cornwall’s sheltered valley woodlands come good from mid-April, and the combination of bluebells under oak with the sea visible through the trees is particular to the far south west. Our woodland walks guide has the woods worth walking and when each one peaks.
In the great gardens, April is the handover. The early magnolias are dropping, the rhododendrons and azaleas are taking over, and the tree ferns are unfurling. The south-coast woodland gardens — the ones planted by Victorian plant hunters — are busiest with flower now and for the next six weeks.
On the cliffs, the seabird colonies are filling. Razorbills and guillemots come ashore to breed from March through to July, so April is a reliable month for them. Our wildlife calendar covers the wider year.
Trevithick Day, Saturday 24 April 2027
Cornwall’s best April event is also one of its least touristed, which is exactly why it is worth your time.
Trevithick Day fills the centre of Camborne on the last Saturday of April — 24 April in 2027 — in honour of Richard Trevithick, the Camborne engineer who built the first working high-pressure steam locomotive. Steam, stationary and miniature engines are displayed through the day and then parade through the town in the afternoon, with music stages, a street market and historical exhibits around them. It has been running for over forty years.
It is a town celebrating its own history rather than performing for visitors, and Camborne is not a place most itineraries include. Our tin mining heritage guide explains why that is a loss, and the festivals guide covers the rest of the Cornish calendar.

Practical notes
- Pack for two seasons in a day. Six and a half hours of sun and eleven wet days in the same month means layers and a waterproof, not one or the other.
- Take sunglasses and sun cream. People under-pack both in April and the UV climbs fast through the month.
- A wetsuit if you intend to swim. 9.6°C is a wetsuit temperature, whatever the air is doing.
- Come after the 9th for the quiet. The difference between the first week and the third week of April 2027 is substantial, in crowds and in price. Our where to stay guide covers booking it.
- Then look at May. The month that follows is the sunniest and driest of the whole year, and in 2027 it carries both Obby Oss and Flora Day — see Cornwall in May.
FAQ
Q: What is the weather like in Cornwall in April?
A: Highs of about 12°C and lows around 6.5°C, with 66–73mm of rain over roughly eleven days and 187–194 hours of sunshine, which is about six and a half hours a day. Frost is effectively finished: Camborne averages 0.03 frost nights in April.
Q: Is April a good time to visit Cornwall?
A: It is one of the best, particularly after the school holiday ends. Sunshine increases by about 60 hours on March, the bluebells and gardens peak, daylight reaches 14 and a half hours, and in 2027 the period from 12 to 30 April is term time with no bank holiday.
Q: When is Easter 2027, and does it fall in April?
A: No. Good Friday is 26 March 2027 and Easter Monday is 29 March, so Easter falls entirely in March. Cornwall’s school holiday runs to 9 April and the summer term starts on 12 April, which makes the rest of April unusually quiet.
Q: Can you swim in the sea in Cornwall in April?
A: Only with a wetsuit or for a short dip. The sea is about 9.6°C, still close to its winter low, even when the air has reached the mid-teens. Lifeguard cover is partial in April, so check the RNLI beach finder and never swim alone.
Q: When are the bluebells out in Cornwall?
A: April and May. Cornwall’s sheltered valley woodlands come good from mid-April. They are not a March flower, despite what some guides suggest.
Q: What is there to do in Cornwall in April?
A: The great woodland gardens are at their peak for rhododendrons and azaleas, the bluebell woods come out mid-month, the seabird colonies are back on the cliffs, and Trevithick Day fills Camborne with steam engines on the last Saturday of the month, 24 April in 2027.
