Cornwall in June: The Longest Days of the Year

Quick answer: June has the longest days of the year — over sixteen hours of daylight, and light in the sky well past ten at night — with highs around 17°C, the fewest wet days of any month at Camborne, and a sea finally warming through 12.6°C. It is the second-sunniest month after May. In 2027 the Cornish half term ends on 4 June and the summer holidays do not start until 23 July, which leaves most of the month as term time: good weather, long evenings, and nothing like August’s crowds.

June is the month Cornwall stops being a shoulder season and starts being summer, without yet being busy. The days stop growing and simply sit at their longest for three weeks. This follows Cornwall in May, and the full-year picture is in our weather guide.

June is a fraction behind May on sunshine — 215 hours against 216 at Camborne, 220 against 224 at St Mawgan — and marginally wetter. What it adds is warmth: nearly two and a half degrees on May in the day, and more than two at night, which is the difference between an evening outside in a jumper and an evening outside without one.

Camborne records its fewest wet days of the year in June, at about 9.5 — just under May’s 9.8. On the north coast it is the other way round, with May fractionally drier. Either way, these two months are the driest stretch of the Cornish year, and June pairs that with real warmth.

The wind is near its annual minimum too, at around 9.2–9.6 knots. Calm, bright and long: June is what people picture when they picture Cornwall, and it delivers it more reliably than August does.

The whole month gains just sixteen minutes, because this is the top of the curve. Day length barely changes between the first week of June and the last, which is why June feels like a long, flat plateau of light rather than a month of change.

Two details worth knowing. The latest sunset is not on the solstice — the sun sets a minute later at the end of June than it does on the 21st, because sunrise and sunset shift at slightly different rates around midsummer. And at this latitude the sky never goes properly black in late June: twilight lasts most of the short night.

That last point matters if you had plans. June is the worst month of the year for stargazing in Cornwall — our stargazing guide is a guide for the darker half of the year. What June gives you instead is the late evening: sunset at about half past nine and usable light until well after ten. Our sunset spots guide covers where to be when it happens.

The sea turns the corner

The water reaches about 12.6°C at Newlyn, up another degree and a half on May. It is still below the 15°C cold-water threshold, but June is the month that swimming without a wetsuit stops being an act of will for most people — particularly in the shallow, sheltered south-coast coves that warm fastest.

Basking sharks are in Cornish water from May to October, and June sits in the heart of that window. Lifeguard cover is at or near its summer pattern by June, but the 2027 schedule was not published when we wrote this, so check the RNLI’s beach finder for your beach. Our wildlife calendar and the seals guide cover what else is about.

The Royal Cornwall Show, 10–12 June 2027

Cornwall’s biggest annual event, and the one with the least to do with tourism. The Royal Cornwall Show runs from Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 June 2027 at the showground near Wadebridge, with the dates published on the show’s own site.

It is three days of livestock and equine competition, a food and farming pavilion, a flower show, a countryside village, music and several hundred trade stands. It is where the farming county turns up to see itself, and it is enormous — accommodation across north Cornwall tightens for that week, so book around it or for it rather than being surprised by it.

Our food guide covers the produce you will meet there, and the festivals guide has the rest of the year.

Golowan and Mazey Day, late June

Penzance’s midsummer festival is the other June fixture. Golowan — the Cornish for midsummer, and the root is worth knowing, as our Cornish language guide explains — runs for about ten days in late June, with Mazey Day as its centrepiece: a Saturday of parades, giant processional puppets, bands and tens of thousands of people filling the town.

In recent years Mazey Day has fallen on the last or penultimate Saturday of June, which places it somewhere between the 23rd and the 29th. The 2027 dates were not published when we wrote this, so check Penzance Town Council or the festival’s own listings before planning around it.

Golowan revived a genuinely old midsummer custom — the bonfires and the serpent dance — rather than inventing a festival, which is why it feels different from a standard town event.

When to come, if you want it quiet

June 2027 has an unusually long clear run, because the Cornish half term falls at the very start and the summer holidays do not begin until the end of July.

  • Mon 31 May – Fri 4 June: Cornish half term, following the Spring bank holiday on 31 May. Busy.
  • Mon 7 June onwards: term time. No bank holiday in June at all.
  • Thu 10 – Sat 12 June: Royal Cornwall Show. North Cornwall accommodation tightens.
  • Late June: Golowan in Penzance, dates to confirm.

Outside those fixtures, the whole of June is term time with the longest days and near-best weather of the year. Cornwall’s schools break up on 23 July 2027, and most English schools a few days either side, so the quiet runs well past June. If you can travel outside school holidays, June and the first half of July are the best-value weeks of the summer. Our camping guide is worth reading if you are considering it — June is when campsites are open, warm and not yet full.

Practical notes

  • Book around the Royal Cornwall Show if you are near Wadebridge or Padstow in that week.
  • Sun cream and a hat. Seven hours of sunshine a day, long days and sea breeze: June burns people who were fine in May.
  • Still take a waterproof. Nine or ten wet days is the fewest of the year, but Cornwall does not do rain-free months.
  • A light evening layer. Nights average 11°C, and the coast cools quickly once the sun goes.
  • Swim in the afternoon, when the shallows have had the day’s sun on them. At 12.6°C the sea is manageable but not warm — that comes in Cornwall in July and August.

A: Just over sixteen hours. At Penzance the sun rises about 05:12 and sets about 21:35 around the solstice, giving 16 hours 23 minutes of daylight, and twilight lasts most of the short night. Day length changes by only sixteen minutes across the whole month.

Q: When is the Royal Cornwall Show 2027?

A: Yes, more comfortably than earlier in the year. The sea is about 12.6°C, still below the 15°C cold-water threshold but warm enough that most people manage without a wetsuit, especially in sheltered south-coast coves in the afternoon.
